The Christian funeral service / memorial service is a time to remind ourselves of the basis for our hope for the resurrection, to rally around the bereaved and to remember the one who has passed. In reviewing the life of a friend or loved one, we can often gain a clearer perspective on our own lives.
The Christian funeral service, like the baptism, is an act of worship in which we thank God for the gifts of life.
When a loved one dies, we encourage you to notify UUMC as soon as possible, by calling our church office at 512-478-9387. A pastor will then meet with the family to discuss service arrangements. Normally, services are held in our sanctuary or chapel, at some other chapel or at graveside. We will arrange for a time and date for the funeral and will assist with planning a fitting service for the deceased and for those who mourn.
While the prayers and sermon are traditionally given by the pastor, you may want to ask a friend or relative to read one of the scripture readings or give a brief statement during the celebration and remembrance. Or you may want to write out a statement for the minister to read.
For more information about the format of the service, the music selections, and an organizational checklist, contact the church office at 512-478-9387.
