Does what we believe really matter? As progressive Christians, we often say things like: “It doesn’t really matter what you believe,” or “You can believe anything you want and be a member in our church!” It’s important to understand the reason we say these kinds of things: our faith is not simply about the things we say we believe. It’s not about checking off boxes. Belief in God? Check. Believe in Jesus? It matters deeply what we actually believe because our deeply held convictions shape us and the ways we act in the world. They shape the way we form communities and how we see the world. They influence how we see God’s work in the world and how we see our own.
