Children and Family

Welcome to the UUMC Children’s Ministry page.  We are so glad you’re here!  My name is Heather Lee Green and I am the Associate Pastor for Children and Families.  Here at UUMC we aim to create a loving, safe, welcoming environment for all children to grow in their faith through sacred stories, music, engagement and play.  Our team is committed to nurturing and celebrating children of all ages’ spiritual growth and exploration.  This church is a progressive voice in Austin, committed to social action, welcoming our neighbor, and sharing God’s love for all.  These same themes permeate our children’s ministry.  I hope you will join us on Sunday morning, and please be sure to come introduce yourself.  I’m the tall red head, usually with a child on my hip!

Sunday School:
Godly Play

This Montessori-based Sunday school program for children 2 years old through 5th grade is held on the 3rd floor of the Education Building from 9:45-10:45am every Sunday throughout the year. Godly Play is based upon the recognition that children have an innate sense of the presence of God, all they lack is the appropriate language to help them identify and express it so it can be explored and strengthened. The Godly Play approach teaches classical Christian language in a way that enhances the child's authentic experience of God so it can contribute to the creative life of the child and the world.  Each week the children hear a sacred story, have a time of response, and enjoy feast (a light snack) with one another.  All are welcome.

We Care For
Our Parents

UUMC recognizes that parents need a community of love and support as they put their best foot forward each day to raise their children.  The Children’s Program offers a few ways for parents to engage:

Modern Family Sunday School Class - Parents with young children are invited to our Modern Family Sunday School class, held on the 3rd floor in Room 309 each week from 9:45 to 10:45am.  We discuss parenting techniques, challenges, aspirations and check in with one another to hear highs and lows.

Parent’s Night Out- This program is for children ages 8months old to 10years old.  It is held every other month from 4:30 to 8:30pm.  Fun activities, art, games, and dinner are provided so that parents can have a couple hours to themselves.  Added bonus: the children have a great time as well!

Mom’s/Dad’s Night Out-Rotating every other month and held at a different venue around Austin, our Mom’s and Dad’s Night Out programs are designed to create community with other parents in our church.  It is an easy way to connect with other moms and dads and have a great time!

Children Are Welcome in Worship

Scripture teaches us again and again that Jesus welcomed the children.  We do the same. Through baptisms, 2nd grade Bible presentations, the Children’s Christmas pageant and much more, children are a significant part of our worshipping community.  That means that we welcome giggles, cries, and wiggly bodies in our sanctuary.  If your child does need a place to stretch their legs or you are a nursing momma who needs a rocking chair, please feel free to visit our Children’s Haven located in the north side of the sanctuary.  It is stocked with toys, a changing table and extra supplies.  We also offer childcare every Sunday in the Education building located across the breezeway from the sanctuary.  Our Safe Gatherings and CPR/First Aid certified childcare staff would love to hang out and care for your little one while you enjoy the service.

Other Programs at UUMC

We have created many traditions for our children and their families to look forward to each year at UUMC.  Some of these include: the Fall Festival, The Easter Festival, Baby Bells, Advent Garden and Festival, Vacation Church Camp, and Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper and Dance Party.  We also offer an Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for ages K-2nd and 4th – 6th grade.  Our tweens (4th and 5th graders) meet once a month for food, fellowship, games and service.  We would love to find a way for you and your family to participate in the life of UUMC.  Please contact Heather Green with any questions.
