I’m placing a link to Wendell Berry’s poem in the notes below. I invite you to carve out a few moments sometime soon to read the poem in its entirety. Read it slowly. Let the words wash over you and linger on the phrases that speak to you.
Practicing resurrection can look many different ways. Above all, it is about choosing life–for yourself and others. It looks like serving. It looks like planting and tending to a garden. It looks like making time for a phone call or coffee with a friend. It looks like showing up for your community or your child’s school. It can look like trying something new. Practicing resurrection does not mean ignoring the hard things in this world–injustice, poverty, and oppression. (Speaking of Berry’s poem, there are words about this, too: “Love someone who does not deserve it. Denounce the government and embrace the flag.”) It does mean facing such things while believing a different world–a better world–is possible. It means putting that belief into action. It means allowing yourself to celebrate moments of pleasure and happiness in the midst of it all. It means finding ways to create and offer a little joy and peace to others - including the earth.
People throughout the world observed Earth Day earlier this week. Thank you for all the ways you love God, others, and all of creation. What a joy to be your pastor!
