Dear friends and members of University UMC:
Last week in worship I shared a little about my own call to ministry as this year marks the 70th anniversary of full clergy rights for women in the Methodist tradition. (Learn more!) Pastors are often asked to tell their “call to ministry” story. But as I shared in Sunday’s sermon, I believe everyone is called. The late John O’Donohue said, “To be born is to be chosen. There is something special that each of us has to do in the world. If someone else could do it they would be here and not you.” The call stories of dedicated teachers are among the most compelling stories I’ve heard. I think of my sister who has taught Special Education in Central Texas for years and now serves as an administrator overseeing Special Education teachers and programs at area campuses. Like so many teachers, she shows up day in and day out because the work is a calling.
When I was a child, teaching school seemed like a magical and blissful profession. As we are aware, however, a variety of factors make teaching one of the most stressful jobs. This is increasingly so in recent years. The compensation does not match the demanding nature of being a teacher. The respect and appreciation for those teaching our children and youth (read: future leaders and future caregivers) do not match the critical role teachers have in the lives of individuals and society. The political climate creates additional stressors. It is tragic and yet no surprise that many teachers are leaving the vocation they love.
Let us renew our commitment to give some love to the teachers we know. Whether a child or grandchild’s teacher, a family member or neighbor - let’s find ways to support them and cheer them on. This can look many different ways. Bring them snacks and food they enjoy. Buy them gift cards. Write them thank you note cards. Ask if they need any supplies for their classrooms and then purchase for them. And vote!

Whether you have a child attending private school or public school or homeschool your child, whether you are an educator or work in one of our area schools, seminaries or universities, whether you are a grandparent, friend or simply an encouraging community member - may it be a terrific year!
