Dear friends and members of University UMC: Today is Juneteenth; in this note, you’ll find resources about today’s celebration—including prayers and videos about the history of Juneteenth and Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth. It’s also Father's Day weekend, and you’ll find below a prayer for Father’s Day written by Cole Arthur Riley, author of Black Liturgies. June is also a month dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease. Let us keep in mind all members of our community who are living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other cognitive challenges. We pray for them, their family, and the caregivers in their lives. The following Alzheimer's Patient's Prayer was written for alzheimers.net: Alzheimer’s Patient’s Prayer by Carolyn Haynali Pray for me I was once like you. Be kind and loving to me that’s how I would have treated you. Remember I was once someone’s parent or spouse I had a life and a dream for the future. Speak to me, I can hear you even if I don’t understand what you are saying. Speak to me of things in my past of which I can still relate. Be considerate of me, my days are such a struggle. Think of my feelings because I still have them and can feel pain. Treat me with respect because I would have treated you that way. Think of how I was before I got Alzheimer’s; I was full of life, I had a life, laughed and loved you. Think of how I am now, My disease distorts my thinking, my feelings, and my ability to respond, but I still love you even if I can’t tell you. Think about my future because I used too. Remember I was full of hope for the future just like you are now. Think how it would be to have things locked in your mind and can’t let them out. I need you to understand and not blame me, but Alzheimer’s. I still need the compassion and the touching and most of all I still need you to love me. Keep me in your prayers because I am between life and death. The love you give will be a blessing from God and both of us will live forever. How you live and what you do today will always be remembered in the heart of the Alzheimer’s Patient. I’m traveling with my family and will return to my Friday Note on July 3. We celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates the announcement in Texas on June 19, 1865, of the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Let us reflect on the jubilation that filled the hearts of women and men of African descent as they learned of their deliverance from the bondage of slavery, even as we mourn that the true promise freedom has yet to be fulfilled. We pray now for all whose lives have been traumatized and remain threatened by the legacy of slavery and institutional racism in our nation. As people of hope, we know that the arc of history is long and that it bends toward justice. Help us to commit to the work of ending racism by building the beloved community where all are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character; in Christ’s name we pray. I try to get people to understand it’s not a Texas thing, is not a Black thing — it’s freedom for everybody. I’m hoping, eventually, we will celebrate from the 19th of June to the Fourth of July; that would be celebrating freedom. – Opal Lee Juneteenth is celebrated in a grand and glorious way, it marked a change that had to happen: slaves freed from bondage. Black Texans had a chance to chart their own course and their own futures. – Arlene Youngblood, Youngblood is a member of Wesley UMC in Austin, Texas. Those with us and those gone before us. Those who held us and showed us what it means to belong to one another. In a society that often demands a singular portrait of the masculine, awaken memories and stories of the tenderness of fatherhood, that our narrative would not allow the men in our lives to be reduced. Grant those who have longed for their father more than they have been held by him the space to lament, to grieve in the way that they need to. Place people in their lives to remind them they are no less worthy of love. Liberate them to name their deepest longings, that they would not be rushed from their grieving.
