Dear friends and members of University UMC:
June is my birthday month, but there’s another birthday around the corner that is occupying more space in my head and heart—The Declaration of Independence. It will soon be 250 years old. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about it. I have fond memories of July 4th celebrations from years ago, but this summer I don’t feel like celebrating. I know I’m not alone, and I’m grateful for wise voices speaking into this moment. One is Starlette Thomas, who joins all of us who yearn for a lasting peace.
