Dear friends and members of University UMC:
This weekend brings us a trifecta of holidays that speak to the mysteries of life and death. Today is Halloween. Tomorrow is Dia de los Muertos. And Sunday is All Saints Day. While Halloween has never really been one of my favorite holidays, I do always enjoy seeing children of all ages dress up in various costumes. I’ve even heard that the modern-day practice of dressing up can be traced back to ancient rituals of disguising oneself as a way of mocking the harsh reality of death. On Dia de los Muertos, vibrant altars are created with pictures of loved ones who have died, as well as items they enjoyed. For those who observe and celebrate, Dia de los Muertos is a reminder that as long as the deceased are remembered, they are not really dead.
