| Service of Worship Sunday @ 11 amScripture: Matthew 20:1–16This Sunday marks the final week of our sermon series, “Jesus Never Said That.” Pastor Earl will be preaching on the phrase “Live Your Best Life Now” and inviting us to reflect on the contrasting images of God presented by the prosperity gospel and by Jesus in the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1–16). As part of our worship, we will also celebrate Labor Day together. We will lift up both divine and human labor in our ongoing work of creating a more just and compassionate world. Our service will feature the “Hymn for Labor Day” and a shared Social Creed Litany, along with the choir’s anthem, “Come to Me, All You Who Labor,” and the offertory, “Sólo Le Pido a Dios,” a powerful song made famous by Mercedes Sosa. |
| “Solo le pido a Dios, que el futuro no me sea indiferente. Desahuciado está el que tiene que marchar a vivir una cultura diferente” / “All that I ask of you God is that the future doesn’t leave me indifferent. Despair is what can make you want to leave your own culture, even your own country.” – León Gieco in “Sólo Le Pido a Dios” which was popularized by Argentine singer/activist Haydée Mercedes “La Negra” Sosa |

Church Gets Top Score on Fire DrillThanks to Sunday School leaders, church staff members, and the congregation, UUMC scored 100% on the first fire drill in the church that anyone can remember. We cleared the buildings just ahead of the 5-minute benchmark established by firefighters, and no one was hurt. The work to ensure that our campus is safe and welcoming continues; in the meantime, please accept the thanks of the Safety and Security Task Force for your participation and your patience. |

Update from Queer CouncilUUMC’s Queer Council formed in March of 2024; in just over a year of its existence we’ve hosted several Queer Fellowship Events including brunches, potlucks, happy hours, and gingerbread house decorating! We planned and led the joyful Reconciling Ministries Network service at UUMC in February with a Queer Choir filled with LGBTQIA+ singers from our community as well as a Drag Children’s Sermon with UUMC’s official drag queen–Aria Rey. In 2024, we facilitated UUMC’s participation in the Austin Pride Parade. In 2025, after several discernment sessions with our queer membership here at UUMC, we decided to seek out a new Pride event to participate in. Some factors we considered were: safety of our folks in an increasingly hostile political environment, alignment of event organizers with the values of UUMC, and opportunity to have conversations and make connections with attendees. For these reasons, we decided to participate in the Pease Park Pride Picnic in June. |
At this event we had a lovely table decorated by queer members and filled with our excellent church merch, and we made new contacts with dozens of folks interested in an affirming church community. AV and our Sanctuary Choir led a Community Sing with songs emphasizing queer joy, and we have continued to see the fruits of this event |

in new faces in our chancel choir throughout the summer! While the Pride Parade was a joyful time for many, we’re excited to continue exploring new ways to minister to queer folks in our community. |
