| Lunch & Learn: What’s Happening in Our CountryJune 8 | 12:15 pm | Fellowship Hall
Our UUMC Central Texas Interfaith leaders invite you to come and share your concerns about what is happening in our country. Perhaps you are concerned about immigration, the free press, the judicial branch, or the diminishing work of federal agencies. You will have an opportunity to share what is on your mind.
A short historic overview to provide context will be presented followed by small group discussions. Together we will identify common concerns and explore opportunities to respond. |

Service of Worship Sunday @ 11 amScripture: John 14:18-29
Join us for worship as we celebrate God’s gift of music in our lives. On this last Sunday of May, the Sanctuary Choir lifts up several special choral anthems interspersed with congregational singing. The scripture reading is John 14:18-29 and Pastor Teresa’s sermon is entitled “A Song for Troubled Hearts.” Special music includes “Amabile Alleluia” by Sarah Quartel, “God is Music, God is Life” (words by Hildegard von Bingen arranged by Jodi French), and John Rutter’s “For the Beauty of the Earth.” In celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander month in May, our opening hymn is “Saranam, Saranam” which means “refuge” in Pakistan and is sung to a traditional Punjabi melody. And on this Memorial Day weekend, we will remember in the pastoral prayer those who have given their lives during times of war. |
|
“Psalm 136 asks how to sing God’s holy song in a strange land, but the psalm emerges in exile just the same. I remember the traditions of songs sung in protest, as lament, and as resistance by those whose voices the powers seek to hush, ignore, or extinguish. When we fear losing our voices, the antidote is to know our songs and keep singing.” – Stephanie Perdew, affiliate professor of Christian history at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary
Look graciously, O God, upon this land. Where it is in pride, subdue it. Where it is in need, supply it. Where it is in error, rectify it. Where it is in default, restore it. And where it holds to that which is just and compassionate, support it. Amen. – Prayer from the Church of Pakistanstan, from The UMC Book of Worship” |

Becoming a Reproductive Freedom Congregation
Should UUMC become a Reproductive Freedom congregation? Under a program of the Texas Freedom Network (TFN), participating congregations affirm the following three key principles: We trust and respect women and people who can become pregnant. We promise that people who attend our congregation will be free from stigma, shame, or judgment for their reproductive decisions, including abortion. We believe access to comprehensive and affordable reproductive health services, including abortion, is a moral and social good.
TFN is an Austin-based grassroots organization of religious and community leaders who support religious freedom, individual liberties and public education. We have been studying and considering this question for a couple of years now, and the Church Council is looking at bringing the above question to the congregation for a vote later this year.
You can find more information about this program on TFN’s website and on our website. |

Wesley Nurse Update
I had a visit recently from Catalina Schultze-Kraft, MHM’s Director of Regional Nursing and Wellness Programs (Wesley Nurse Sites). I mentioned Open Door Ministry and the support that I have received from Pastor Earl and the lead volunteers Armin Gutmer and David Woodruff. The picture below is of the table set-up from last weekend. Armin was kind enough to create the signs above me in English and Spanish, and he strung them in place. The signs say: |
|
Wesley Nurse Station: Get help with medical referrals and community resources. Blood pressure screening available at no cost
Estación de la Enfermera Wesley: Ayuda con referencias médicas y recursos comunitarios. Examen de presión arterial gratuito. |
| We might call where my table is the “Wesley Nurse Resource Corner”. I am hoping that MHM will provide me with a banner or a sign that can be displayed for Open Door guests to see. Things move slowly; fingers crossed! |

I have connected with University Presbyterian Church’s UPLift Ministry and will be providing WN services most Tuesday mornings. My coworker and I participated in St. Austin’s Outreach to Persons in Need ministry, and I plan to return. They assist with rent or utility bills and are a great resource. There are a couple of other places and ministries keeping me occupied, including Baptist Community Center Mission on most Fridays.
Finally, I’ve been working with AV and Megan to have a guest speaker from the Kind Clinic come in the Fall semester. He will be able to present on: an overview of the Kind Clinic Services (HIV/STI testing, treatment, prevention, gender affirming care, intersex care), educate the audience on ways they can advocate for their care, emphasize the importance of receiving preventative healthcare screenings and not to delay them due to fear or discomfort, mention the special training that Providers at the Kind Clinic have received to be able to work with patients who are trans and why the experience is different than going to a primary care provider, and birth control options and their interactions with hormones. We haven’t decided on a date or the details yet, so this is still pending.
More to come! – Erika Castillo Wesley Nurse |
