Dear friends and members of University UMC:
Earlier this week, poet Andrea Gibson died at the young age of 49. While I might add that they died “following a long battle with ovarian cancer”, Gibson themself said, “Whenever I leave this world, whether it’s sixty years from now, I wouldn’t want anyone to say I lost some battle. I’ll be a winner that day.” Gibson (pronouns they/them) was Colorado’s poet laureate and a beloved voice for the LGBTQ community and environmental concerns. I purchased their latest book of poetry, “You Better Be Lightning,” months ago, but didn’t take the time to read it cover to cover until this week. Their ability to embrace both the ordinary and extraordinary in our daily living is unmatched and an inspiration to us all.
