Service of Worship Sunday @ 11 amScripture: Luke 10:25-37We begin a new sermon series July 6 on world religions. This Sunday Pastor Teresa introduces the series, inspired in part by Barbara Brown Taylor’s book entitled “Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others.” Teresa will share some of what she has learned about Judaism including how her learning has influenced her own faith journey. The scripture text is Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and we will celebrate Holy Communion. The altar rail offering is for Lydia Patterson Institute and you can read more about this ministry below. This Sunday we’ll also enjoy singing some of your favorite hymns as submitted recently including ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Love Divine All Loves Excelling’, and ‘It Is Well With My Soul.’ |

“Religion is not what the European Enlightenment thought it would become: mute, marginal and mild. It is fire – and like fire, it warms but it also burns. And we are the guardians of the flame.” – Rabbi Sacks |

Children’s Haven RenovationParents of infants and young children: please note that this Sunday the Children’s Haven will not be available as Chad Jones and Earl Kim are doing some major work to renovate and clean it. We apologize for the inconvenience. |

Altar Rail Offering: Lydia Patterson Institute
For over 100 years, Lydia Patterson Institute (LPI), a historic El Paso institution that has educated thousands of young people along the U.S.–Mexico border, has provided a faith-centered, bilingual education to students from both El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. The only United Methodist secondary school in the South Central Jurisdiction, Lydia Patterson's graduating classes routinely boast a 100% college acceptance rate and nurtures future leaders who are faithful and community-minded.
At the Río Texas Annual conference, we received news that on May 28, 2025, the U.S. State Department paused all new and some renewed student visa appointments to implement expanded social media screening. The policy was issued without notice and with no clear guidance for schools or families.
In response, our July altar rail offering will go to Lydia Patterson Institute. You can read more on their website. As well, you can watch the report given by Dr. Carla Cardoza to the Louisiana Annual Conference. This conference took place just days before the Río Texas Conference and Dr. Cardoza's report is understandably emotional as she received news of the unnecessary and cruel decision just moments before standing to give her report. |

Becoming a Reproductive Freedom Congregation
Should UUMC become a Reproductive Freedom congregation? Under a program of the Texas Freedom Network (TFN), participating congregations affirm the following three key principles: We trust and respect women and people who can become pregnant. We promise that people who attend our congregation will be free from stigma, shame, or judgment for their reproductive decisions, including abortion. We believe access to comprehensive and affordable reproductive health services, including abortion, is a moral and social good.
TFN is an Austin-based grassroots organization of religious and community leaders who support religious freedom, individual liberties and public education. We have been studying and considering this question for a couple of years now, and the Church Council is looking at bringing the above question to the congregation for a vote later this year.
You can find more information about this program on TFN’s website and on our website. |

Open Door/Fig Leaf: Book DriveDo you have books or magazines to share with the unhoused neighbors who visit our Open Door and Fig Leaf ministries on Saturday mornings? Please consider donating them! Our guests enjoy popular fiction and nonfiction, general-interest magazines, and religious publications. Westerns, mysteries, and "lawyer dramas" are especially welcome. Please refrain from offering anything you wouldn't consider reading yourself. Boxes of books and magazines may be left in the first-floor elevator lobby, near the bins for clothing donations. Thank you! |

Open Door/Fig Leaf: Beat The Heat Drive
Summer is upon us, and the temperatures are rising. As the heat intensifies, our unhoused neighbors are especially vulnerable. Open Door and Fig Leaf Ministries are launching a "Beat the Heat Drive" to collect simple items that can bring comfort during these sweltering days. This season, we’re focusing on two key items: cotton bandanas and wet wipes.
Here’s how you can help (now through the end of July): Shop our Amazon Registry. Purchase items and have them sent directly to us. Bring a Donation. Pick up some bandanas and/or wet wipes during your next shopping trip and drop them off in the Open Door and Fig Leaf bins at church.
Together, we can offer a bit of relief and care to our neighbors in need this summer. Thank you for your generosity and compassion! |
